Savings for seniors
Senior discounts you can verify on the official page (October 2026)
Many "senior discount" lists online are out of date, or full of offers nobody can confirm. This page lists only what we could read on the provider's own official page, each with the date we checked and a link so you can confirm it yourself. Rules and prices change, so always check the official page before you buy.
Everything below is as of October 2026. We have no affiliate links and are paid nothing by any provider listed.
Which travel discounts can seniors get?
National parks: America the Beautiful Senior Pass
US citizens and permanent residents age 62 or older can buy the Senior Annual Pass for $20 or the Senior Lifetime Pass for $80. The pass covers entrance fees at national parks and other federal recreation sites.
As of October 2026. Official page: nps.gov, passes (page last updated October 9, 2026).
Amtrak: Senior discount
Amtrak travelers age 65 and over can get 10% off most rail fares on most Amtrak trains. On cross-border services run with VIA Rail Canada, the 10% senior discount applies from age 60. It does not apply to sleeping accommodation charges and may not combine with other discounts.
As of October 2026. Official page: amtrak.com, senior discount.
Is there help with phone or internet bills?
Possibly. Lifeline is a federal program for people with low income. You can qualify by being on a program such as Medicaid, SNAP or SSI, or by income at or below 135% of the 2026 Federal Poverty Guidelines. For one person in the 48 contiguous states, that is $21,546 a year.
As of October 2026. Official page: lifelinesupport.org, how to qualify. Lifeline is income-based, so it is not an age discount.
Are there property tax breaks for seniors?
Yes, in many states, but the rules are local and the income limits change every year. Here are three examples we confirmed on the state's own page. Check your own state and county.
- Texas: school districts must give an additional $60,000 homestead exemption for homeowners age 65 and over, on top of the $140,000 general homestead exemption. Texas Comptroller.
- Florida: a county or city may adopt an additional homestead exemption of up to $50,000 for age 65 and over with household income under an annually adjusted limit. It is a local option, applied for with your county property appraiser. Florida Department of Revenue.
- New York: the Enhanced STAR exemption requires the owner to be 65 by December 31 of the benefit year, with an income limit of $110,750 for 2026 benefits. NY Tax Department.
As of October 2026. For more on property tax and eight other bills, see 9 Bills That Can Shrink or Stop After 65.
Can a driving course lower my car insurance?
In New York, an approved Point and Insurance Reduction Program course reduces the base rate of your auto insurance premiums by 10% each year for three years. It covers liability and collision, and applies to the principal operator only. Other states have their own rules, so ask your insurer.
As of October 2026. Official page: NY DMV.
Are there tax breaks at 65?
Yes. For tax year 2025, the additional standard deduction for age 65 and over is $1,600, or $2,000 if you are unmarried and not a surviving spouse. There is also a $6,000 deduction per eligible person age 65 and over for tax years 2025 through 2028, which starts to phase out at modified adjusted gross income of $75,000 (single) or $150,000 (joint).
As of October 2026. Official pages: IRS Topic 551 and IRS, senior deduction eligibility.
Is there help with Medicare costs?
Medicare Savings Programs can help pay the Part B premium, and sometimes more, for people with limited income and savings. See our guide to Medicare Savings Programs. During Medicare Open Enrollment (October 15 to December 7) you can also review your plan costs.
What did we leave out?
We left out offers we could not confirm on the provider's own official page, including bus, restaurant, retail and membership discounts. Many of those change by location and date. If a business offers a senior discount, ask at checkout and read their own page.
